Sagalassos – Burdur Archeological Museum – Ariassos
Overview
Our tour starts with a visit to the ancient site of Sagalassos, located in the South-West of Turkey, near the present town of Ağlasun, roughly 110 km or a two-hour drive north of Antalya. Sagalassos is an archaeological site in southwestern Turkey, known for its extraordinary finds such as the heads of the Roman emperors Hadrian and Marcus Aurelius. The city is situated on Mount Akdağ in the Western Taurus mountains range, at an altitude of 1450-1700 meters. In Roman Imperial times, the town was known as the “first city of Pisidia” and during the Hellenistic period, it was already one of the major Pisidian towns. Large-scale excavations have been ongoing since 1990 and have revealed a large number of buildings, monuments and other archaeological remains documenting the monumental aspect of the Hellenistic, Roman, and early Byzantine history of this town. After visiting Sagalassos, we will have lunch in Aglasun and then visit Burdur Archeological Museum. The museum is known for its rich collection of 50,000 monuments and is one of the first 10-15 museums in Turkey. The tour will end with a transfer back to your hotel.
